About Atelier
mantra Tattoo & Piercing Atelier
Abhinandan Basu, known as Obi, has evolved from a conventional lower-middle-class background in Kolkata to become a celebrated tattoo artist in Germany. His journey, which began with a spontaneous tattoo in the mid-2000s, led him to develop a distinctive style called “Bongo,” which blends Bengali folk art influences with contemporary motifs. Obi’s approach to tattooing is deeply personal; he views it as a transformative experience for his clients. Despite lacking formal training, he drew inspiration from various sources, including a former American prisoner, to perfect his craft. In 2015, Obi was recognized as one of the top three Indian tattoo artists in the “World Atlas of Tattoo,” elevating his career in Europe to new heights.
Obi’s move to Germany marked a turning point and led to the co-founding of Mantra Tattoo Atelier with his partner Janine in 2019. Located on one of Mannheim’s most picturesque streets, Lange Rötterstraße 52, the atelier spans 120 square meters and features several tattoo stations, piercing booths, and an inviting seating area. This space embodies their vision of creating a comfortable, intimate environment for clients, similar to a family living room, where one can feel at home while getting a tattoo or piercing.
Mantra Tattoo Atelier not only serves as a creative hub for Obi and Janine, but also welcomes talented guest artists from around the world. This approach reflects their belief that tattooing is an art form and provides a platform for artists to exchange ideas and showcase diverse styles. The atelier’s success has allowed both founders to travel and participate in international conventions, further enriching their artistic perspectives. For those who want to experience the unique atmosphere and artistry at Mantra, up-to-date information about guest artists and events can be found on their Instagram page.
